The UNH Interoperability Labs Reference O-RAN Testbed utilizes a highly scalable, modular architecture based on the O-RAN ALLIANCE and 3GPP specifications and defined by Ansible Code, and built on the latest compute and RAN platforms. Driven by automated Ansible orchestration, this testbed enables researchers and industry partners to rapidly deploy, configure, and customize end-to-end 5G Open RAN environments on bare metal or containerized cloud infrastructure. By leveraging these modular playbooks, users can seamlessly swap out software and hardware components—including OpenAirInterface RAN stacks, Linux Foundation’s OCUDU,, open-source 5G cores like free5GC and open5GS, and near-real-time RAN Intelligent Controllers (RIC)—to evaluate novel protocols, AI-driven applications, and network slices under highly repeatable conditions.
The facility supports comprehensive O-RAN conformance, interoperability (IOT), and end-to-end (E2E) system testing. This testing is backed by the UNH-IOL’s advanced physical infrastructure, which includes walk-in RF isolation chambers and picosecond-level synchronization calibration powered by the NSF-funded Open PHASE (Precision High Accuracy Timing) initiative to ensure compliance with strict fronthaul timing requirements.
